Everybody loves the look of custom built-ins, but they can be ridiculously expensive to build from scratch. However, we’ve found that by using IKEA cabinets as a base and building around them with moldings and trim to tie in with the room, it’s possible to build fantastic looking built-ins at a fraction of the price. Our designer Breanne worked with the homeowner to design this awesome two-tiered media center with tons of much-needed storage for their basement play room/media room.
As you can see in the photo below, the customer had a really big awkward space that really served no purpose and ended up reverting to a giant catch-all.
Using IKEA Adel Off-White kitchen cabinets, Breanne’s design crammed as much storage into the space as possible!
To tie everything together, we used a combination of matching panels from IKEA, and MDF molding which we painted with color matched paint.
All the messy media cables tuck nicely in the space behind the cabinets and the components store out of site behind the cabinet doors when not in use.
The customers are super excited to finally have the storage they need and an excuse to buy an enormous new TV that would fill in the space!
Does ikea still make these?
What did you use for on top of the cabinets?
