Bainbridge Island kitchen remodel with mid-century modern design

Bainbridge Island Kitchen

Bainbridge Island, WA

A mid-century modern transformation featuring IKEA cabinets with custom rift white oak doors and integrated handles, built in our shop. We installed a stunning tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling, refinished the original hardwood floors, and completely redesigned the layout to open up the space. The warm wood tones and clean lines create a kitchen that perfectly honors the home's mid-century character.

Project Details

This remodel was born out of necessity — a dishwasher fire had damaged the countertops and surrounding cabinets, and the smoke destroyed the electronics in the range. By the time we came on the scene, the homeowners were cooking on a hot plate. But the silver lining was the chance to finally build the kitchen they'd always wanted: a mid-century modern design that honored the home's original architecture while bringing it into the present.

Working with our designer, the homeowners settled on a layout that moved the cooktop closer to the sink for a better cooking workflow, and dedicated an entire wall to tall pantry cabinets flanking a built-in oven, microwave, and refrigerator — a massive upgrade in storage. To make room for the new layout, we moved one wall back about six inches to open up the walkway to the living room, and closed off a doorway to gain more cabinet space. Small moves that made a big difference.

The custom rift white oak doors are what give this kitchen its mid-century soul. Every door is grain-matched so the wood flows seamlessly from one cabinet to the next, and the notched integrated handles keep the lines clean — no protruding hardware to interrupt the look. Tongue-and-groove cedar paneling on the ceiling is a classic mid-century detail that adds warmth and dimension overhead, and refinishing the original hardwood floors back to their natural color lightened the whole space. We also carried over one feature from the old kitchen that the homeowners loved: open shelving on the back of the peninsula, rebuilt with matching rift white oak panels.
