A dramatic living room transformation centered around a custom fireplace feature wall. We designed and built a floor-to-ceiling tile surround with an inset TV niche, flanked by custom mahogany storage cabinets with a Pacific Northwest touch — a live-edge madrone butcher block bar that doubles as a serving surface. The tile work extends across the entire wall, creating a stunning focal point that anchors the room.
We designed and built the mahogany cabinets in our shop, matching the wood species to the home's existing kitchen cabinetry so the feature wall feels like it belongs in the house rather than being added to it. The cabinets have doors on both sides, turning what would otherwise be wasted space on either side of the fireplace into generous storage. And we didn't leave any dead space inside, either — the interior cabinet frames wrap around the fireplace and TV niche, following the jogs and corners of the structure so every usable inch is accounted for.
One of the details we're most proud of is the way the mahogany and tile meet on the face of the wall. There's no trim piece or awkward transition — the wood and tile come together cleanly and seamlessly, which gives the whole wall a built-in, architectural quality rather than looking like separate elements bolted together.
The TV is recessed into the wall, which keeps the front surface clean and flush with no protrusions or extra bulk. But the recess isn't just about aesthetics — it's a practical safeguard. With a fireplace directly below, hot air rises past the screen. Setting the TV back into the niche allows that heat to pass by, protecting the components while keeping the living room looking sharp.
